Elevator/Cataraqui Bay summer?

Hey guys, not sure how many people still check these boards...

I'm new to the area (living on Wolfe) but have been kiting here a few times in the past while visiting my parents. I usually ride off the shore at my parents (south side of Wolfe) in a S-SW crossing the border back and forth... I found an empty lot in Bayfield Bay to launch from a few weeks ago in a good SW and it was fun... not perfect but fun. There are a few marsh islands towards the mouth of the bay and I was hoping for some real flat water... the patches of flat were small but I'll definitely do it again.

I checked out Cataraqui Bay (which I noticed is called Elevator Bay on the map) and it looked killer; open to the SW but with that breakwater making for some sick flat water, and no boat traffic. I scoped it out from Lake Ontario park and it seemed like you could launch from there if they are cool with it... I just noticed on the guide map it says to not ride that area in the summer. Any ideas why? anybody try this before?

The reason it isn't recommended is because it is pretty grungy in the summer. Lots of bird-!@#$ etc.
That said, people do cruise down there generally from the PUC dock in a south wind and get inside the breakwall for the flat water. If you stay towards the breakwall in the south of the bay, it isn't too bad. I wouldn't want to have to float to shore though ....

I don't know if anyone's launched from LOP. Watch for kids and tourists if you do.

The redevelopment of LOP will certainly have people thinking of it as an option, but like all kite spots in the Kingston area it is not witout its significant hazards.

The exposure is good in a S.W. better in a South. Major issues are entry and exit as you have to launch in tight often populated quarters, and skirt tree lines to get into and out of the water over rock breakwall and or wind shadowed beach. Emergency exits are super sketch as the bay itself is muck bottom, and the fallow lands that stick out behind the condo towers are brush with broken concrete and rebar everywhere. The water quality itself is definitely an issue in summer or after rains. There is a large field on the other side by the plant where post treatment solid sewage is spread! The smell can be deadly at times. Either way I would not want to get a mouthfull of anything in behind that breakwall.....ever. Between bird !@#$, human !@#$ and invista !@#$,,,, it aint great and part of the reason that water entry was not made more swim friendly by the redevelopment.

ah, there's some great local knowledge on the location... thanks guys. I would still be tempted to try it.. very cautiously and with no plans of heading further up into the bay.

What Brent/Mike said...

Especially the part about just riding there from the PUC in a south or SSW. With that direction, it only takes a couple tacks.

When I've ridden in there in a SW, the west end of the wall seemed to be in a bit of the shadow of Carruthers/Patterson point so keep that in mind if you venture way west on the inside.

Watson and Anna sure have been hitting it up a lot this year and they seem to love it...

It's a fun ride up there, the area out front of Portsmouth gets some wicked wave refraction that makes the stuff we get just off the PUC breakwall pale in comparison.

Well despite the warnings I made the trip over from Wolfe to Lake Ontario Park early sunday morning... totally worth the trip. Setup by the "beach" around 8:30 so luckily no one around. Self launched off a picnic table worked fine. Wind was SSW so perfect easy tacks to the breakwater.

Flat Flat Flat... perfectly flat and still and clear water, pretty epic. Would have loved some more wind but I had a great ride, alternating between the flat and the waves just outside the mouth of the bay. Never ventured too far into the bay... and the few tacks that I was a bit further in I resisted boosting or anything slightly risky.

A guy riding strapless on a green/black Naish showed up from the west and carved up the flat water, followed by two riders coming from the east! 4 of us in there for a bit before I headed back in.

I love flat water so I was up for the risk vs. reward factor kiting there. Will definitely be back again, maybe this weekend... and I'll take another thorough antibacterial shower afterwards as well...

I ride there all the time. The water in the south part of the bay is exactly the same as out in the lake. There is an opening in the sea wall at the West end (I can actually nip into the bay through it when water is high and wind direction right)so the water inside the wall is circulating all the time. Weeds are not a problem either. Not sure why people think its polluted?? oh well, more room for me Anna, Craig and you emoticon . I guess I got there on Sunday just as you went in.
