Kiting at Dunes Beach (North wind this weekend)

It is supposed to be pretty windy all weekend, but mostly from the north. I was thinking of driving to sandbanks and trying to ride at dunes (I have heard of others doing this). I guess if you walk far enough down the dunes you can get away from all of the people (I can't imagine it is that busy this time of year anyways).

Has anybody ever ridden there? Any other spots that would be good in a north wind?

West Lake can be good in certain wind directions. However, the days that it is typically 'on' there, are days with higher wind and lots of gusts due to the short fetch from land. Anything with NE in in is going to be really dirty coming over from Sheba Island/Isiah Tubbs and if it is a true NW you are probably better off riding Sandbanks beach (not Outlet) on the lakeside and getting some little grumbler waves in the rare true sideshore conditions. The bonus is that the fetch from Wellington in a NW is far enough that the wind can be pretty clean.

If you do ride West Lake, don't launch from the small beach at the entrance. Not only will this potentially cause issues with the park and other users (although like you say if it is windy no one will be there) but it will mean you are right down in the pocket of the bay and it is too tight to get upwind. Instead, walk way up on the left (at least 500m) - there is a bit of an opening on the slope of one of the dunes where you can set up. The wind will be better here as well.

Have had some great sessions there, but always a bit gnarly.

Thanks for the info!

I did manage to get out at dunes for a pretty good session with my 12m. There were quite a few locals around which was nice.

It is a tricky spot because the wind just funnels you in and it was very up and down. One guy was out with an 18m while others were riding 11-12m!
