meeting to plan the Shoreline Shuffle - Wed Feb 6 - 7pm at Marine Museum

(posted on behalf of Water Access Group)

Dear waterfront friends,

Thank you for your support last fall for our grant application for the Shoreline Shuffle event planned for June 23. Unfortunately, we did not get the grant. As a result will not have the funds to host a big gathering at Richardson Beach with tables, music, etc as planned, but we are going ahead with a modified version of the event and hope that you can still take part. We want to include as many organizations interested in the waterfront as possible, and hope to use this event as a step towards the creation of a ‘waterfront coalition’ for longer-term waterfont planning in Kingston.

Our focus will now be entirely on the walking/paddling the length of the downtown shoreline, from Douglas Fluhrer Park to Lake Ontario Park. The land portion will include walkers, hikers, wheelchairs, etc. It is exactly 7.7km with all the ins and outs of the shoreline and will take about 2 hours to complete on foot. The water portion will include canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, fishing boats, sailboats and whatever other type of craft people want to bring. The plan is to have this ‘flotilla’ move along at the same pace as the people on land. The event will take place rain or shine!

The main aims of the event are as follows:

· Create better public awareness about the good/bad of our downtown shoreline (have you ever walked/paddled this length of the waterfront yourself to see the potential of what we have?)

· Demonstrate the need for a long-term, integrated waterfront plan for Kingston

· Highlight the importance of ongoing investments in public facilities along the lake

The planning meeting will take place at the Marine Museum (55 Ontario St) at 7pm on Wednesday February 6. Please send someone from your organization to take part in the discussions about this event, as well as the creation of a waterfront coalition. Please feel free to forward this invitation to relevant organizations that may not already be on our list.
