Re: Race board build
In the lighter stuff I would be crashing my tubes I bet too. I have a sister to Ken's FS. I was looking at it today but just a it too light to risk all that swimming.

Re: Race board build
Out today in probably too light wind for my 12. But I got up on the beast a few times. It is really way more difficult than I thought. Right away I would turn upwind. Then trying to flatten the board like a windsurfer I stalled. So lots to learn against the long term muscle memory of riding a TT.
A lifevest is a good idead too as it is difficult to even start with all the floatation!

Re: Race board build
It's easier in better winds. you have to keep the board flat and not stall the fins. This is difficult to do if you don't have enough power. And, yes, you are fighting muscle memory of TT riding (sinking windward rail). Try to pull the old muscle memory of bearing off to pick up speed and lock the fins in when they're providing enough lift. wind is supposed to be better tomorrow

Re: Race board build
There was guy (Louie Farmer?) from Montreal here today. He was about to go out on his 11 ozone edge but his girlfriend (very cute) gave him a horrible launch (apparently they miscommunicated) and the 11 ripped on the metal wall. He waited until the wind died around 4pm and went out on his 15. He's good! He was here last year for Cork. Finished in the top two (there were only 2 entered ). His board was all black Carbon with 3 huge very sharp true ames fins. It seemed to gybe better than mine with only three fins.
How wide is your board? the full 70cm? I'd like to find out how 3 fins feel someday soon. Maybe I'll get over this week. Seems to be windy a lot lately! Dry summer = good thermals???

Re: Race board build
Mine is 60cm=24in=standard materials
70cm is a pain for materials.
I have to get back on the horse this week.

Re: Race board build
Yes , back on the horse (I was thinking Calgary stampede when it was trying buck me off today!)
Sat was my 1st trip around Simcoe, took 3hrs
Today was #2. Left at 12:15 back at 2pm (so I can move my car and not get a ticket lol). Total 1:45, shaved an hour and 15 min off but still fell in about a dozen times.
Someday (this fall?) I'm thinking one hour and come back dry. It's steep learning curve!

Re: Race board build
WOW! Around simcoe alone on a kite and a board with knives sticking out. I never feel comfortable that far from shore with a kite. Be carefull out there.

Re: Race board build
I'm actually a fairly lazy person (won't see me in the Ktown tri!) and hate getting injured (won't see me on a slider or do unhooked kiteloops in 25kts). I think the around Simcoe is easy and safe because:
I only wipe out when almost stopped when gybing and tacking. Keep reaching speed down when I'm alone. Played waterpolo for 15 years (ie. good swimmer). Most fickle part is shooting through the gap because the wind is flukey. I am only 30m from a shore at that point. If the wind dies then there is a huge inconvenience of having to take two ferrys home - but not dangerous.
oh, and my fins are small and blunt compared to the Rista and True aimes fins.
Soon I'll just practise short courses because my board handling will be better - I hope!
check out my route
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5579541
if that doesn't work then I can send a jpeg. Does this forum allow jpegs to be posted?
Looks like your bay is perfect one tack downwind and one tack back upwind total 15 miles in southish winds like the ones when I went around Simcoe. hmmm, might have to visit you that way. At least then I'd have a ride to the ferry if the wind suddenly died lol.
