July 17 sbx or west lake?

Sunday is looking potentially good for SW winds at sbx.

I am planning to go there but just curious about west lake... Can anyone tell me a little more about where to access West Lake, launch info, and best wind direction for riding there?

Thanks, AS

Sometimes West Lake will get a bit of a thermal and have more wind than Sandbanks despite them being so close. In a SW you can put a kite up at the boat launch near the wakeboard school on West Lake. Drive down the road past the fence line and you can pull in there to park. The down sides are that its choppy, there is no real beach, the wind is always dead on shore at the launch and there is a fence, road and power lines literally a few meters downwind of the launch. There is also a limited run to get upwind between the boat dock and the wakeboard school, so don't launch unless your sure there is enough wind to get up and out. Not a beginner spot!!! If your quick to get upwind it can be a decent spot but why drive all the way to Picton only to ride the same conditions you can get around here. I only ever use that spot as a last resort if I made the drive and that is the only place with enough wind. Beats getting skunked. The beach is where its at. Prefer it a million times more. Way up the beach on Sandbanks is also the best choice for people just getting on the learning curve. You can also ride the east side of the dune at Sandbanks which is also West Lake. Thats only on the very unpredictable NE winds that sometimes show up early in the season. You access at the dunes beach day use area and have to hoof it way up along the dune to get away from any beach users. Its too crowded this time of year to consider that spot and you will get kicked out by park staff for rigging a kite. Again, during the summer season, the north end of Sandbanks beach (up past the big brown "no nudity sign" is the only sanctioned kite launch in the park.

Ditto what Brent said, you're better off sticking to SBX north of the sign.
