Saturday Session
Hi everyone,
I am coming from Ottawa, new to kiteboarding and Kingston.
My new 2010 9m naish charger just came in, and I will be in Kingston this weekend, the wind forecast seems impressive.
So, where/when are people heading out.
I am stretching the high-end of this kite with the forecasts ~25knots, so maybe it'd be best for me to go somewhere with a little less wind...
Let me know,
Myk

Re: Saturday Session
Right at the PUC just in front of the Queen's residences is the usual spot now that the lake is solid. It's getting a little wind swept out there and need a new dump of snow, but thats where most people will ride. The wind is by far cleaner there. There is also good snow in the marsh at Elevator Bay. Both spots are mapped out under the Riding Maps links in the Rider Info tab on the main page of this site. Really just look for kites off the waterfront and you'll find us.
Welcome.

Re: Saturday Session
I usually launch at the public boat launch at the corner of West and Ontario St. public parking there too - next to Pumphouse Museum and other side is the Kingston Yacht Club who's pier provides some shelter when setting up and when packing up kite. I've seen other riders here too. This is my 2nd winter in Kingston so still getting to know the good spots as well.
I'm thinking of heading out Saturday afternoon as well with my 8.5 Smart Kite which may be pushing it in the forecasted 25 KN gusting to 30 Kn - we shall see. Let's hope they are less than forecasted for once for some better cruising... was out on Wednesday afternoon in very gusty winds - very jerky riding - not so much fun.

Re: Saturday Session
if your shoping,
[email protected]
will have a few in stock
Dakine, OR, and Best.
Get you out this weekend.
Just a reminder when launching further east in heavy air overpowered. The ferry channel is a lot closer than up at the PUC. More a "what if" scenario, but I've seen one of those lately.

Re: Saturday Session
Yup the Ferry Channel is always in the back of my mind. Snowkiting would turn into water kiting plenty quick or get some incredible air and jump it - yah right!
I'm going try to get out for few hours today between 1 - 4 pm

Re: Saturday Session
Saw a few pretty big kite out there today. Takes a lot less kite in winter than summer. Your kites top end on water is way way too much for icy winter conditions. Besides it sucks to be overpowered on snow. If it windy Its just more fun to er on the small side. In North West conditions like today your better off not going down by the yacht club area. Gets pretty on off in the lee of the hospital there. Better off further west and walking out a bit to get some cleaner air. The yacht club area is great in a NE.
Dont mean to sound like Gramma, but it sketches me out to see big kites in that much wind, on ice when its North West less than a K from the ferry channel. Especially when I know a lot of the new faces are still pretty green.
Not sure if you noticed but the local crew were way way way upwind on small kites on the far side where the snow is still really good and the wind is clean.

Re: Saturday Session
All good points Brent... yup i was surprised to see so many big kites too in that wind...
yup should have flown my 3 today but my wife left with the car and it was in the trunk... so was ok on my 8.5 Parafoil reefed in flying it high but think yes the PUC will be launch site of choice next time in West or NW winds... and as you suggested the Yacht Club when E or NE...
Still figuring out all the best spots in Kingston depending on wind and strength (and where the best snow is as you pointed out) -I've been kiting in Parry Sound and Georgian Bay area for 6 years and knew all the best spots there. Nice to have this forum to share info...
