Reading ice charts...
I'm trying to get a handle on the charts and ice info from the .gov site.
Does anyone else out there use this?
http://ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca/prods/NAIS25ECT/20110207180000_NAIS25ECT_0005574062.gif
This map released yesterday shows 'fast' ice between the eastern tip of amherst and the island off the south western shore of wolfe island.
So does that mean that section is all safe to ride on?
Could I ride from collins bay to the ferry crossing?

Re: Reading ice charts...
Yeah man, I've done a couple downwinders this year and the lake is pretty solid anywhere within reasonable reach from shore. Some of the best snow is way off the PUC a little closer to Wolf Island where there are no pressure cracks, so no slush.

Re: Reading ice charts...
As far as now - Fast Ice (IN GREY on Maps) means 100% of ice is greater than 15 cm thickness so fine for boards or skis, or skidoos or walking on . The RED areas are where 9/10ths of ice is greater than 15 cm but not all so a little more precarious... yellow and green thinner and thinner etc...
So between mainland and Wolfe Island and Amherst Island is solid but just constrained by Ferry channels ... to be avoided unless you want to do some crazy water skiing/boarding...
