Aruba! and Snowkiting!

Hi everyone,

Jenn here, you may remember me from the 7M black Slingshot kite, short hair, and neon pink, leopard-spotted lifejacket.

I just returned from 10 days in Aruba, and am super keen to go snow kiting.

I want to tell you about Aruba - it is great for kiting! I took lessons and am now up and riding on my board! Finally! There are 2 main kite spots - Fisherman's Huts on the Northwest corner of the island, and then Boca Grandi on the East side. Fisherman's Huts is where all the kite schools are and the wind is straight offshore (you can pay $20 to be rescued if you can't stay upwind, I definitely did that a few times haha). Boca Grandi is the 'pro' area - the wind is onshore to cross-onshore, and the surf/waves are huge! We saw lots of cool tricks and jumps. Aruba is pretty affordable (look for last minute packages online) and the weather is great - extremely consistent wind and sun, and hotter than places further North like Cuba at the moment. If you have any questions about Aruba let me know.

I have never been snowkiting before, but I brought all my gear and am really keen to go! (I have skied and snowboarded for many years) I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share tips on where they go, when they go, what kind of wind to look for, and anything I should know about snowkiting that is different from water kiting (regarding setup, crashes, etc). I would love to go out with some people if anyone is willing to have me along! 613-539-5872. Since I'm in university, I am free during the day when I don't have class.

Also looking forward to kiting on the water in the spring!

Re: Aruba! and Snowkiting!

hey Jenn, Aruba, nice.

Right now elevator bay is the best bet till the lake freezes. Check out the Rider Info on the KBK site for locations and details. Wind works when it is anywhere on the west part of the dial. Once the big lake freezes, even east winds can work.

Biggest difference between snow kiting there and on water is ice is hard Snowboard helmet and knee/elbow pads highly recommended, especially when starting. Everything else is pretty similar, just a question of getting used to it.
